Flower Delivery to Amesbury by Clare Florist

A town in Wiltshire, England, Amesbury is the home of the popular monument of Stonehenge. It is also the place where the Amesbury Archer was discovered in 2002. Apart from that, Amesbury is the oldest settlement in the UK, and had been occupied since 8820 BC.

It is said that Amesbury has been inhabited since prehistoric times. One proof of early settlement is the famous Stonehenge monument. There are also other prehistoric structures in the area, including the monuments that surround the Stonehenge, a Neolithic village discovered in Durrington, and the archaeological finding of the Amesbury Archer and Boscombe Bowmen. The latter are both in display at the Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum.

The name of the town is derived from Ambrosius Aurelianus, the Romano-British resistance leader who was against the invasions of Saxon in the 5th century. Some say a monastery was built by an order of monks, and was later destroyed by the Saxons prior to their settlement in the place in the 7th century.

Modern

Amesbury estate was held by the Seymour family until 1675. A number of grand homes were built, which includes Diana and Kent houses as well as a mansion in 1660. Later, the estate was passed to the Bruce family, which was then passed to Lord Carleton, who also bequeathed it to Charles Douglas, 3rd Duke of Queensbury, his nephew. It remained in the family until 1824 when the Antrobus family bought it, and remained in their possession until 1979.

Places to Visit

Stonehenge – it is one of the most popular sites in the world, and is located two miles to Amesbury's west and eight miles to Salisbury's north. It is a ring of stones standing within earthworks. Today, Stonehenge is considered the greatest national icon of Great Britain, representing power, mystery, and endurance.

Woodhenge – it is another prehistoric icon that is located in the Stonehenge World Heritage Site in Wiltshire, England. It is a Neolithic Class II henge resembling a timber circle that dates back to 2300 BC. Woodhenge is said to be a mark of a particular state in human evolution of religious beliefs and organisation of communities.

Boscombe Down Aviation Collection – it is a museum that displays a range of aircrafts, replicas and models of trials equipment and weapons, and cockpits. Its main aim is to tell the story of flights and flight tests in the UK.

Cholderton Charlies Farm - tourists who are into farming can check out rare breeds of British animals saved from extinction. There are also special areas for children to play and explore, including nature trails that may have Amesbury flowers growing along the track. Splash of Colour Ceramic and Craft Cafe – it is a studio that offers a selection of pottery, from household items to fun things for kids. Most of the products here are unglazed and waiting to be painted by both kids and adults. Surely, this is a perfect place to find souvenirs for your loved ones back home.
