History
The first appearance of Lindfield was in a Saxon charter dating to 765 AD. It was described as an “open land with lime trees.” The lands were granted by King Ealdwulf for the building of a Minster church. By the time the Domesday Book was compiled, the Archbishop of Canterbury was the one holding the lands.
In 1343, Lindfield was granted a royal charter by King Edward III for a market to be held every Thursday, as well as eight-day fairs to be held twice a year.
The town was once part of a thriving Wealden iron industry. William Levett, a county curate, extracted iron ore from the village. Later on, the Henslowe family from Lindfield itself entered into the iron milling business.
Trains arrived in 1841 with the building of the London-Brigton railway. In 1866, the Ouse Valley branch line was added.
Attractions
The lime tree-lined High Street has more than forty medieval and post-medieval timber-framed houses, as well as several individual shops. A natural spring-fed pond can be found at the bottom of the High Street, which not only has fish but is also frequented by ducks and herons. The Common lies beyond and serves as the site for village celebration and leisure activities.
