Flower Delivery to Arundel, West Sussex with Clare Florist
Arundel is a market town in West Sussex, England. It is about 50 miles of London, 18 miles North West of Brighton of the English Channel and 10 miles east of Chichester. In population, Arundel is smaller than most other parishes. There is a museum, a medieval castle, a Roman Catholic cathedral amongst other attractions in town. Arundel comes second only to Chichester in number of listed buildings in West Sussex. Along the eastern side of the town runs the river Arun.
Traces of early roman influences still remain with the town, however, it was majorly developed as a Saxon town as referred to in the Domesday Book in 1086, by which time Arundel was already a flourishing town and port, with a population of a few hundred. The Fitzalan family owned the Arundel Castle from the 13th to the 17th century before it was passed along with the Earldom to the Duke of Norfolk. Arundel was dominated for many centuries by the Dukes, during which time, Arundel had developed to a busy international port and a market town. The Dominican friars, who arrived in the 13th century, gave Arundel its first religious building.
Between the period of the civil war and the late 18th century, Arundel was in a very poor state, However it had become a small flourishing market town at the turn of the 19th century with a population just below 1,900. The 19th century witnessed a growth in Arundel’s population and by 1901, there were already over 3000 people in the town. Today it is about 3700. Arundel railway station was built in 1863 consequently reducing the activities at the ports drastically. Gaslight came in 1838 while electricity arrived in the 1930’s. Today Arundel is a popular tourist destination well known for its Arundel Castle, Arundel Parish Church, Arundel Farmers Market, Arundel Cathedral.
ATTRACTIONS
Arundel Castle
Arundel castle is a medieval castle established on Christmas Day 1067 by Roger de Montgomery who became the first to hold the earldom of Arundel by the graces of William the conqueror. The castle was damaged in the civil war but restored between the 18th and 19th century. For many centuries, the castle has served as a hereditary stately home with the family of the Duke of Norfolk for more than 400 years. It remains the Norfolk family’s principal seat and is a Grade I listed building.
The building standing today owes much to Henry, 15th Duke of Norfolk (1847-1917). It was completely restored in 1900. The castle was one of England’s first houses to be fitted with electric light, firefighting equipment, lifts and central heating. It cost over £36,000 to install Electricity but the beautiful chimneypiece in the Drawing Room cost a miserly £150!
