Standing two miles east of Livingston and a mile east of neighbouring Mid Calder, East Calder is a destination for those who love the charm of a small town. The centre of the town forms part of the Almondell and Calderwood Country Park.
The main road in town is where you'll find most village facilities, and these include two pubs, a library, a variety of shops and bookmakers.
The south side of the main road is where the Parish Church – which was built in 1888 – is located. Those with an interest in old gravestones can view a few interesting ones located in the churchyard.
Given the small town nature of East Calder, you can always treat it as a romantic destination of sorts. What's not to love about it? It's small and can lend a really intimate atmosphere. HISTORY
East Calder is built on four estates and the largest part of the village was built on the Calderhall Estate. This estate extended south of a line from a bridge between East and Mid Calder towards East Kirk burn and along Main Street towards Park Avenue. A wall and hedge were used to mark the eastern boundary.
The land to the west of Park Avenue was part of the Almondell Estate which was owned by the Earl of Buchanan. To the south of the Calderhall Estate was the Langton Estate. To the north of Main Street, between East Kirk burn and the boundary of Almondell Estate, is the McLaggen Estate or Pumpherston.
ATTRACTIONS
Jupiter Artland – located within the very picturesque estate of Bonnington house, this garden is the brainchild of Nicky and Robert Wilson. If you can't view some East Calder flowers, this is the next best place to be. The sculpture garden is whimsical and it plays out like a journey. Everything you see is like a different narration from the various artists who collaborated to make this a reality.
St Cuthbert's Parish Church – a roofless 16th century parish that makes for a great historical stop.
Other interesting historical attractions include the Gothic-style church from 1888 and Ormiston Hall which was built in 1851.
