Flower Delivery to Nuneaton with Clare Florist
Nuneaton is a large town of over 82,000 people, located in the shire county of Warwickshire. Its located in the west midlands region of England. Nuneaton has been popularized by the author George Elliott, who spent much of her younger life here. In her novel “Scenes of Clerical Life”, George Elliott wrote about the town of Milby, which actually depicted life in Nuneaton.
Nuneaton itself actually comprises several villages, including Hartshill and Bulkington, which adds another 20,000 residents to the region. The city of Coventry is closest, at fourteen kilometres away, with the River Anker running through the town. The town has the Harshill Hayes Country Park which provides a great viewpoint of the town. If the weather is clear one can see Atherstone and Leicester in the distance.
Nuneaton’s name was derived from a twelfth century Benedictine nunnery, with the local church named St. Mary’s Abbey Church. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the church was sold and turned into a mansion. After it was abandoned in the 17th century, it fell into ruins. The church was eventually rebuilt, but little exists of the original building today.
The town grew around the Abbey at this time, and there are still some remnants on site. Before this, the town was called “Etone”, meaning “water town”. The names combined to become Nuneaton. The more modern name of Non Eton was found in a record from 1247. Nuneaton has a mention in the Domesday book, being listed as a small hamlet.
Nuneaton is also a market town, beginning in 1233, and markets are still held today that sell produce, flowers, and handcrafted goods. After 1539, the nunnery fell into ruins after the Dissolution of the Monasteries. In 1552 a royal charter had the King Edward VI School built. In 1944 it became a grammar school for boys, nicknamed KEGS.
Nuneaton thrived in the 17th century and beyond. It was situated at the centre of the Warwickshire coalfields. In 1801, Nuneaton had a population of over 5000 people, which was the largest in the county. During the industrial revolution, Nuneaton developed a large textile industry, continuing to thrive. Brick and tile making and brewing were also popular industries.
By 1901, Nuneaton had a large population of over 25,000 people. During WWII Nuneaton had a large munitions factory. Unfortunately, this mean that it suffered great bombing at the time, causing significant damage, with 100 people losing their lives. During the post-war years the town was rebuilt.
The people of Nuneaton enjoy many sporting activities. There are three main leisure centres in town: Pingles Leisure Centre, Jubilee Sports Centre, and the Etone Sports Centre. Eton had many theatres in the past, but only one now remains, The Abbey Theatre.
