Sully is a town of 4600 people living in Wales. It’s located in the principal area of Vale of Glamorgan, and the county of South Glamorgan. Sully is almost as far south as you can get in southern Wales. In Welsh the town is spelled Sili. It’s centralised between Penarth and Barry towns. For those who wish to travel to the larger city of Cardiff, it’s only an 11.3 kilometre drive away.
Sully has bilingual signs on both sides of the village, both Sully and Sili. There has been controversy over the use of both. Sili is likely derived from a Norman name, but others believe that it was taken from the Sully family who owned a manor in the 12th century. There is also the theory that Sili may mean “south lea” which is a southern pasture. Whatever the reason, the name Sili has been in use for a longer time. There is some controversy over its pronunciation: silly in English or seely in Welsh, but the name Sili is backed up by the Welsh Language Board as being appropriate.
Many residents have considered renaming Sully as Abersili, but that doesn’t solve the issue of pronunciation. Abersili means “the mouth of the river Sili”. Eventually most people considered the new name inappropriate for the region.
The Sully Church was built in the traditional Norman stone style with a tall rectangular tower, and the small graveyard to the side. It is dedicated to St. John the Baptist.
The Baron Reginald de Sully and his family were a Norman family who owned the town’s manor. He was one of the “Twelve Knights of Glamorgan”. He had been awarded the manor in 1093 by Sir Robert Fitzhamon.
There is a record from 1591 about the transfer of the estate. Sir Edward Mansel of Margan wrote that Fitz Haymon gave the castle, and town to Sully, and it was to be named as such. Sir Reginald then gave much of the land to his men, and was also known to possess fame and wealth. He built his own manor house in the town which was built in a new architectural style. He spent most of his life here. Later, the castle and the manor were destroyed by Owain Glendower, the Prince of Wales.
The Sully family also owned estates in Devon, and they also built a small fortified castle in Sully. Today, there remains little of this castle, except for a small wall. This castle used to be where the Norman parish church still remains. There are other ruins in town, including a 13th century moated manor house on Sully Moors.
Sully Castle used to stand on an area of land that was called Castle Wood, but has recently had its name changed. Today, there are no survivors of the de Sully family name.
