HISTORY

The Rowledge area was from the Norman Conquest and was mostly agricultural manorial, common land and not suited for cultivation termed waste. The land had many large farms and cottages, and some of these still exist in the West End portion.

An influx of businessmen and Army officers came into town when the railways to Farnham in 1848 arrived and the development of Aldershot as the home of the British Army in 1854.

Rowledge was an area important for hop growing which supported the brewing industry in Farnham.

The Parish Church of St James was built in 1869.

In the early 1900s, further development was made which filled the open fields and created the village that is seen today.

It was founded in 1961 to provide the community with a collection dedicated to the history of the local area. The collection is housed in an elegant Georgian townhouse which is Grade I listed.

Waverley Abbey – features fragments of the church and monastic buildings of the first Cistercian Abbey in England that was founded in 1128.
