Horne is one of the rural villages and civil parishes in Surrey . It covers more than 3,500 acres and includes the British Wildlife Centre. It's around four miles away from Horley and Lingfield, eight miles away from Oxted and 22 miles away from Kingston upon Thames.
The History of Horne
There have not been any signs of Celtic settlement in Horne, but it became a part of the Tandridge hundred during the Anglo-Saxon times. The earliest reference to the area by name occurred in the 12th century, although it did not officially become a parish until the early 1700s. The common land in Horne became enclosed in the 1800s to create a larger farm and, in 1891, it was given up by the Jesus College, Cambridge (who had owned its manor since the late 1400s) so that a parsonage house could be constructed.
Horne appeared in the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales in the late 1800s. It was described by John Marius Wilson as “a village and a parish in Godstone district, Surrey” that had a church and an extensively moated castle. Wilson noted that properties in Horne were divided among a few people.
Horne in the Modern Times
Horne doesn't have a railway, but it has a regular bus service. So, if you plan to spend your holiday in the village or just drop by for a weekend visit, you won't find it hard to catch a bus. Of course, if you prefer to bring your own car than using public transport, you can easily do so by taking the A22. Feeling up for a longer road trip or just want to view more beautiful scenery? Take the M23 or the coastal A27 road.
Once you're in the village, make sure to check out its beautiful attractions. One of the sights you should must is the Church of St. Mary the Virgin. It has been extensively restored over the years but, despite the changes to its structure, you can still marvel at its ancient and gorgeous archaeological details. These include its south door (which dates back to the 1200s) as well as its windows, oak screen and chancel beams (which date back to the 14th and 15th centuries).
Don't forget to visit the British Wildlife Centre, especially if you're travelling with your family. By doing this, you and your children can take a closer look at around 40 species of British wildlife and observe how they behave and interact with each other. You'll also listen to keepers as they talk about what they do in the Centre and learn more about their jobs as well as the animals they take care of.
