Flower Delivery to Ewell with Clare Florist
Ewell is a suburban area of the Epson and Ewell boroughs in the county of Surrey, located in the southwestern portion of England. At the centre of the village is a business centre. Ewell is also considered a parish, and is separated into different neighbourhoods, such as West Ewell, East Ewell, Ewell Court, Ewell Downs, and Ewell Grove. As of 2011, there were over 34,872 residents living here. In 2005 it was declared the most desirable place to live in the UK, due to its number of open spaces.
The name Ewell comes from the old English word “aewell”, and it means “river source or spring”. Ewell is along a line of settlements that follow springs and the foots of hills, from London Basin in the north, to North Downs in the south. The current spelling of Ewell has first been recorded in the Testa de Nevil, from the 13th century.
In the Domesday book of 1086 Ewell is listed as “Etwelle”. This region was held by William the Conqueror. There were two mills in this region, 16 ploughs, and fourteen acres of land that consisted of meadows, woodlands and herbage. Osbert de Ow owned the manor. Ewell was granted a licence to be a market town in 1618, but the markets stopped in the early 19th century.
The British Museum contains many items found in Ewell. Remains from the Bronze Age have been found, as well as bones and pottery from the Roman times.
Nonsuch Palace was one of the most grandest building projects done by King Henry VIII for Surrey. This palace was built at Cuddington, near Ewell. The former church and village on site were demolished to make way for the palace in April 1538. A lot of the work was finished by 1541, but many buildings were added for several years afterwards. This palace is notable for introducing Renaissance design to England. It cost £24,000 in its time. Today, the estate is a public park with an 18th century manor house that opens on occasion to visitors. The palace itself is long since gone, though pieces of it are in the British Museum, or in other buildings around the country.
Bourne Hall is one of the notable landmarks of the region. This building is a modern circular structure and has a glass ceiling dome. Inside, it has a library, gym, café, theatre, and museum. Outdoors, it has a pond with ducks, swans, and a fountain. There are also many events, such as fayres, held on site.
There are many other large outdoor spaces, including King George’s Field in Ewell Court. Here there is the Ewell Athletics Track, and the Harrier Centre that was built in 2000. It also has a small children’s play area.
