St. Mary The Virgin church is located approximately one mile north of the main village. It’s one of thirty-eight round tower style churches still in existence in the area of Suffolk today. Its circular tower has the largest diameter of any church in England. The church is in perpendicular English style, and its church tower is considered to be in ruins. The main church area is still in use today. The nave and aisle have been carefully restored.
There are two other churches in the area called the Primitive and the Wesleyan Methodist Chapels. In the region of Wortham Ling are the remains of a Roman camp.
While Wortham may be a tiny village, it still has its own post office, and money order office. There is a local public house called the Dolphin Inn.
Wortham’s past history records that during Edward the Confessor’s time (1042 to 1066 reign), that Wortham used to be compromised of two parishes, each with its own church and parsonage. The two parishes survived past the Norman conquest. In 1769, the two were combined into one by William Evans, rector of Eastgate. The church in Southmoor fell into ruins and was never replaced at around 1785.
Richard Cobbold lived in Wortham from 1825 to 1877, and wrote a book about the infamous Margaret Catchpole. He also published a book in 1860 about “The Biography of a Victorian Village - Wortham”. This book also contains a series of drawings and describes many of the characters who resided in the village at the time. This book continues to be a useful resource for genealogists.
The Harvest Festival is celebrated yearly by the Wortham Primary School. About every two years Wortham Village has an Open Gardens event, inviting members of the public into private gardens. Ticket passports offer the opportunity to spend a day or two travelling around to various viewings and have a chance to buy flowers and plants. There is also the opportunity to see artist’s studios and have a ploughman’s lunch or to enjoy a cup of tea. Proceeds from the event go towards the Wortham Village Hall Fund.
