Flower Delivery to Shimpling with Clare Florist
Shimpling is a small village and civil parish located in southern Suffolk, on the eastern side of England. It’s part of the local government district of Babergh. The closest market town is Bury St. Edmunds. It’s between Bury St. Edmunds and Sudbury. The village consists of two portions. There is the new Shimpling Street, and then three kilometres from there is the older village of Shimpling.
The Halifax family was key to much of the village’s development. They arrived in Shimpling during the 19th century and purchased properties and farms. They build Chadacre Hall and made it their home. Chadacre Hall is on an estate of 2300 acres. These lands also have twenty-two farms and fifty-four houses. They also built many other houses, the school and schoolhouse, and a coal house. Chadacre Hall was eventually sold in 1918. It became an agricultural institute before closing in 1989. It was then purchased by David Hart, who passed away in 2011. It has since been purchased by the first Earl of Iveagh from the Guiness dynasty.
The Halifax family were also responsible for building the Village School in 1841, which was a girls’ school. The daughter of Thomas Halifax added a boys’ section in 1871. The school was used for nearly 150 years, but finally closed in 1989. By this time it only had twenty-nine students, who all moved to Lawshall.
There used to be the Old Post Office in the village. It originally opened in 1852. It closed in the early 1970s. At one point, another house was utilized as a post office, but today, the village does not have a post office at all.
Shimpling has one church, St. George’s parish church. The church has a long avenue of lime trees from the Rectory Lane. The church was originally built in the 12th century. It has a round tower, and a chancel built during the 13th century. The south wall of the church has a canonical sundial. During the 15th century, Gothic windows were installed. The windows contain 14th and 15th century stained glass. During the 1860s, the Halifax family made extensive renovations to St. George’s parish church.
Shimpling is located in the centre of arable farmlands. Originally, most of the residents living here would make their money from farming. Eventually other occupations became popular, such as beer seller, blacksmith, carpenter, miller, shopkeeper, and teacher. Today, no blacksmith, school, or shop remains.
The Shimpling Parish Council is responsible for the planning and development of the village, as well as the maintenance of the Village Hall. The Village Hall is the centre of the community’s many social events. They are also responsible for the maintenance of the children’s play area, which opened in 2010.
