Flower Delivery to Martlesham with Clare Florist
About two miles south-west of Woodbridge and six miles east of Ipswich is the village of Martlesham. The village is often referred to as “old Martlesham” by the locals to differentiate it from the newer Martlesham Heath development, which is located one kilometre to the south. Then again, both do form a single administrative parish.
HISTORY
A Roman settlement is believed to have existed in Martlesham as there have been findings that date back to Roman occupation. The village is also mentioned in the Domesday Book.
Martlesham is mostly an agricultural area with White's 1844 directory of Suffolk describing the village as “affording pasturage for numerous herds of sheep and cattle.”
By 1917, the Experimental Aircraft Flight of the Central Flying School was transferred in town from Upavon, Wiltshire. The airfield was placed on the heathland and on 16 January 1917, the Martlesham Heath Airfield was opened as an experimental airfield. The airfield continued in this capacity after the end of World War I, and during the Second World War, it became a significant RAF airfield.
When the airfield was closed, the lease of the site was sold to Bradford Property Trust which then developed Martlesham Heath to the south-west of Old Martlesham.
