Looking back
Leiston used to be an ancient Saxon settlement that is evident from the ruins of the Leiston Abbey. When the wealthy Abbey fell into disrepair, the monastery was dissolved in the 16th century. From the ruins, however, rose a national school that is exclusive for young chamber music players.
The 19th century marked the beginning of prosperity in town, mainly due to the railway line that opened and brought engineering opportunities. Unfortunately, it closed its doors for passengers in 1966.
In 1862, Leiston Works engineering plant was opened by Richard Garrett and employed over 600 workers. It was here that munitions, steam engines, box making machines and shell making lathes were all engineered. But its commercial business closed down in 1980.
