Flower Delivery to Great Bealings with Clare Florist

Great Bealings is a tiny village located in the Suffolk Coastal district, and county of Suffolk, England. It’s situated on the southern side of England, but not right on the coast. The River Lark passes right through the middle of the village. There is a a hump back bridge that must be crossed on the main road to enter the village. This bridge was built in 1841.

During the 2011 census, it was recorded that 302 people lived in the village, spread out over 113 households. Villagers may travel to the two closest towns for amenities in Ipswich, about 9.7 kilometres away, and Woodbridge at 4.2 kilometres away. There are many other villages nearby, including Culpho, Hasketon, Grundisburgh, Little Bealings, and Hasketon.

The village was not built with a centre but is instead composed of two parts. One portion flows from Lower Street to the eastern part of the village, with the second portion beginning at Boot Street and Grundisburgh Road and flowing to the western side of the village.

In the 1086 Domesday Book there is a record that Saxon Hall was owned by Halden. Anund the priest was in attendance. The Hall was on the same meadow as the church. The Hall was owned by several families throughout the years: de Peche, Clenches, and Majors. The Majors tore down the Hall in 1775. These materials were recycled to build Bealings House.

The village has kept excellent records of the rectors of the Parish, all the way from Anund the Priest in 1086, to Celia Cook in 2015.

There have been Roman discoveries in the village but it’s believed to have Saxon origins, which is where the Beda or Bele people used to live. The village was named Belinges Magna until 1674. In 1674 it was translated to Great Bealings, even though villagers would often still use Magna in the name until recently.

The village has one church named St. Mary’s. It’s located about the centre of the two main parts. St. Mary’s Church is featured on an embossed metal sign that names the Great Bealings Village.

It’s believed that the village had two windmills in the 1800s, but the remains are long since gone.

Great Bealings’s main industry has been agriculture, with several farms located in the village. In 1855, the village also had boot makers, builders, gardeners, shopkeepers, a miller, and brickmaker for occupations.

The village has a playing field for local sports and was named after John Ganzoni, Lord Belstead. He created a charitable trust fund for the project. This is located near the Village Hall and features a nice grassy plateau, a concrete multi-sports court, and children’s play equipment. The village shares both this field and the local Village Hall with Little Bealings, a slightly larger village of 470 people. Little Bealings has a nearly identical sign to Great Bealings.
