HISTORY

Although the etymology of Harriseahead's name isn't known, the “-head” part of its name is attributed to the Old English word heafod which refers to the high location of the town in the Staffordshire Moorlands.

Staffordshire is a very inland county – probably the most inland of all the counties in the UK. The county has been called the land of Crocks and Locks for its links to canals and the pottery industry.

The county of Staffordshire was also rich in minerals, such as copper, lead and limestone. Coal was also a major industry in town and was used in the firing of most minerals. When supplies depleted, a lot of coal had to be used and it had an effect on the development of urban villages like Harriseahead.

Harriseahead was very much involved in coal mining for years. Today, it is a commuter village for Stoke on Trent, as well as Manchester and Birmingham. Although the reliance on coal mining has ceased, Harriseahead still bears traces of its industrial heritage as seen in disused fustion mills, derelict buildings and a disused tramway.
