Flower Delivery to Swaythling with Clare Florist
Southampton, located on the south coast of England, is Hampshire’s largest city and is known for its connections to the Titanic and as one of the departure points for D-Day during World War II. More recently, it is known for being home to many of the largest cruise ships in the world. Although much of Southampton has changed (including the establishment of a large shopping centre and retail park), some places like Swaythling have maintained their small village feel.
History
Not much is known about Swaythling’s early history. The village is believed to be named after a stream running through the area, Monk’s Brook, which in Old English is swætheling, meaning “misty stream.”
Swaythling was the location of the largest remount depot, a place where horses and mules were collected, trained, and cared for before being sent to the Western Front, during the First World War.
Today, Swaythling is mostly a residential area with a large student population owing to the close proximity of the University of Southampton. The university’s Wessex Lane Halls and City Gateway housing facilities are also situated within Swaythling.
Attractions
Swaythling has connections to one of history’s most troubling events, the First World War. The Swaythling Remount Depot, which held horses and mules for the British Army, was located in the village. But apart from historical connections, there are a couple of old structures worth a look for those interested in architecture.
St Mary’s Church is one of the two medieval churches left in Southampton. Some parts of the structure date back to the Norman period while the chancel arch is from the 12th century. The church lies in an area off Wessex Lane close to the north-eastern portion of the city of Southampton.
South Stoneham House is another old structure located within Swaythling. It was built for Edmund Dummer, the Surveyor of the Navy in 1708. The grounds of the manor house were laid out by Capability Brown after 1772.
Couples wishing to spend a romantic time in the village can still do so. Time can be spent appreciating the old structures and then heading to the High Road to find a nice take-away outlet for a quick meal. Swaythling flowers can be presented or flowers in Swaythling can be bought to give to a date. Even better, a trip outside of Swaythling’s borders offers some interesting sites to see.
Getting Out
The suburb of Portswood is one of the nearest to Swaythling and it has a shopping area on Portswood Road.
The Tudor House and Garden is not far from Swaythling and is considered as the most important historic building in Southampton. A trip to the garden at the rear of the property highlights the fashion from the time of the Tudors.
The Southampton Maritime Museum is also worth a visit for those interested in the Titanic and White Star Line. The museum also houses exhibitions on the port of Southampton.
