HISTORY

William I of England gave the lands around Tickhill to Roger de Busli after the Norman Invasion. Busli then built a castle on a small hill.

Tickhill was the second most important town after Doncaster during the Middle Ages. The settlement is listed in the Domesday Book as a former estate centre at Dadsley.

The eponymous hill in town was most likely the base of the current Tickhill Castle. The town of Tickhill grew around that castle and the church of St Mary's was built soon after.

Tickhill was once a very successful town in England, but the decline of the castle's importance during the medieval period saw the town experience a slide as well.
