Flower Delivery to Darton, West Yorkshire with Clare Florist
Darton is a large English village located in West Yorkshire, in the upper region of England. It’s a part of the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, as of 2005, situated on the border of West Yorkshire. In 2001, Darton had a population of 14,927 residents. The River Dearne flows past Darton. Darton is to the east of Kexbrough and eight kilometres north of the town of Barnsley. The A637 road is the main way to transit to the village, as well as the M1 motorway. The village is 79 metres above sea level.
Darton has an old church, Darton Church, that was built in 1150 A.D. and features a tall square tower with crenellations at the top, and an old graveyard to the side. There is a primary school, and a secondary school in town, as well as a post office, and other shops.
The word Darton is believed to be derived from “Dearne”, also the name of the river. Ton is Anglo-Saxon for town. It’s believed that Darton means “Town on the Dearne”. Other language experts think that the name means a deer enclosure.
The Darton Church was first built in 1150. This is also when the Parish of Darton was founded. The official register of births, baptisms, marriages, and deaths didn’t begin until 1539, the same time as the rest of England.
Like most villages, Darton has its own railway station. It links the villages to Leeds, and Sheffield. Darton station links to the West Yorkshire PTE. Historically, the West-South Yorkshire boundary ran between Darton and Woolley Colliery.
Woolley Colliery is a village close to Barton. Many of its residents would commute to work at the coal mines located there. The mines ran from about 1850 to 1980, hence the need for the rail link between locations.
In June 2007, Barton made the national headlines. After forty-eight hours of torrential downpour, the River Dearne overflowed, causing its banks to burst. There was heavy flooding in the village. There was no way to get out of town through the main road. Many homes and businesses were damaged, including the local post office. It took another year before it was able to open again. There was more flooding in 2008, but recent years have been normal.
For eight years now the Coalfields Festival has been running at Darton Cricket Club on Church Street in Darton. This is a family-orientated festival, and is run as a charity event. In past years it has been called the M-Festival. Musical entertainment varies from local new bands to more established acts. Tickets are quite affordable. Proceeds usually go to selected hospices.
