Auckley is a village as well as a civil parish located in Doncaster in South Yorkshire. The parish covers the village of Auckley as well as the nearby village of Hayfield Green, and it had a population of 3,745 people according to the 2011 Census.

If you’re looking for a peaceful and relaxing place to spend the weekend or even live with your family, you won’t go wrong with choosing Auckley. It might not be as popular as other areas in South Yorkshire, but it’s a great place to be if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and unwind with your loved ones.

A Glimpse into Auckley’s Past

Auckley was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, proving that the village was already present in the 11th century. According to the Book, Auckley was part of the Strafforth hundred and had a population of 27 villagers, 34 smallholders, 40 freemen, and a priest. It had 22 ploughlands, four acres of meadow, two mills, and a church.

The village was also mentioned in the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, which was written by John Marius Wilson and published in the 1870s. Wilson noted that Auckley (also spelled Awkley at the time) was a township in the Finningley parish and had 69 houses and a population of 309 people.

Auckley experienced a substantial growth in real estate in the 1960s, when properties were developed to accommodate the families of air force personnel who were assigned at RAF Finningley. The base was closed in 1996, and the old RAF housing was bought by the South Yorkshire Housing Association as well as by private individuals.

Auckley in the Modern Times

Today, Auckley is a thriving village with schools, pubs, takeaways, and several businesses as well as bus services to Haxey, Epworth, Finningley, and Doncaster.

If you love fishing, you’ll want to check out the Hayfield Lakes. This fishery contains two lakes (Adam's Lake and Dannie’s Island Lake) and used to be the location of the Fish'O'Mania for many years until the competition was transferred to Cudmore Fisheries in Staffordshire in 2008. The Hayfield Lakes is still a popular spot among fishing enthusiasts today and is a great place to catch carp, perch, bream, roach, and rudd.

If you’re visiting Auckley in summer, you might be able to catch the Auckley Show, which will be held on August. It’s an annual show that covers many events and attractions including a dog show, a car boot sale, exhibits, and children’s sports. Make sure to check out the horticultural events, which include best flower contests and floral art competitions as well as other events for vegetables and potted plants.
