Flower Delivery to Dunsyre Village with Clare Florist

Dunsyre is a small village in South Lanarkshire located near South Medwin. It sits in the east of Carnwath and southwest of Edinburgh. Its name, which is reported to be of Celtic origin, signifies “the hill of the seer”.

In the early periods of Scottish history, the land of Dunsyre simply formed part of the vast possessions of distinct families in Lanark. In the 17th century, however, the land garnered more attention as it became the seat of an ancient barony. It was during this period that Convenanters started frequenting the village for retreats.

From 1867 to 1945, a railway branch running from Carstairs to Dolphington served Dunsyre. This didn’t only prompt population growth but also contributed to the village’s economy. Sometime after, the railway was shut down and a disused embankment of this runs along south of the village today.

Attractions and Landmarks

The Little Sparta Garden

Little Sparta is the renowned artwork of Ian Hamilton Finlay. Imbued with idyllic content, this garden has been created out of an artistic fusion of natural landscape and of sculptural and poetic elements.

As most artworks are seen displayed in museums, public parks, streets, and private houses, it is truly a unique achievement for someone to have shaped a landscaped garden into an artwork that encompasses horticultural elements as well as individual works in stones, wood and metal. To top it all off, this garden’s theme revolves around events and structures of society. Finlay intended to be philosophical yet poetic with his landscaped artwork. Among the many sources of the metaphors and images reflected in his garden are pre-Socratic views of nature, the French revolution and WWII.

Dunsyre Hill

Overlooking the village is the Dunsyre hill. It forms the termination of Pentland Hills and has an elevation of 500 feet or 150 metres above land surface.

The Dunsyre hill boasts the panoramic view of vast greens and gatherings of beautiful Dunsyre flowers. It is the perfect go-to place for people who enjoy tranquil walks, runs or even picnics.

The Westhall Tower

Another iconic landmark in the small village of Dunsyre is the remains of the Westhall Tower.  A tower dating back to the 16th century, the Westhall Tower has been built in the style of a peel tower. Today, although already in ruins, the structure poses as a beautiful historical piece in the middle of a grazing land blooming with flowers in Dunsyre.

The Famous Dunsyre Blue Cheese

If there is anything the village of Dunsyre is most popular for, it’s the Dunsyre Blue. The Dunsyre Blue is a mould ripened, handmade cheese produced by the HJ Errington farms. It is made from the milk of Ayrshire cows and imparts a rather complex flavor as it is sweet, salty, spicy and sharp. With its striking aftertaste, many people pair the cheese with either Rhone wine or Whisky.

Because it is not a popular town, Dunsyre is able to offer an experience that travellers and vacationers would certainly find unique. It’s a great destination for anyone who wants to enjoy the scenic views of valleys and plains. It would even be perfect for couples who wish for a quiet, romantic vacation. Send flowers to Dunsyre and surprise your loved one while you are there.
