HISTORY

Merchant, lawyer and philosopher James Boevey built Simonsbath House in 1654. For 150 years, his was the only house in the Royal forest of Exmoor.

An Act of Parliament was passed on 4 July 1815 that enabled the Inclosure of Exmoor. The Forest was split into allotments. John Knight of Lea Castle in Wolverley, Worcestershire was the highest bidder and set about converting the Forest into an industrial mining complex. Knight built a 29-mile stone wall around his estate and some of it remains to this day.

The 19th century saw Simonsbath develop when houses were built, along with St Luke's Chuch. These structures provided a centre for the population.

The Simonsbath estate was purchased by Viscount Ebrington, the future Hugh Fortescue, 4th Earl of Fortescue, after the early death of Knight's son, Frederick Sebright Winn Knight. The eastern part of the estate was sold to industrialist Sir Robert Waley Cohen in 1927. The rest of the estate was sold by the daughter of the 5th Earn in 1958 to pay death duties.
