Pitminster is considered a village located in the county of Somerset, in the southwestern side of England. It has a small population of 956 people, and is closest to Taunton, only 6.4 kilometres away. It forms a civil parish that includes Angersleigh, Blagdon Hill, and Staplehay.
The two parishes of Pitminster and Angersleigh were considered part of the Taunton Deane Hundred, an administrative division. Today, they’re part of the non-metropolitan district of Taunton Deane, which was formed in 1974.
The parish council of Pitminster is responsible for much of the governance of local issues. It’s also responsible for looking after the maintenance of the village and looking after the footpaths, trees, and listed buildings.
Pitminster means “the minister or mother church of Pippa’s people”. The history of Pitminster dates back to 938. During this year, King Athelstan, an Anglo-Saxon king from 924 to 927 and King of the English from 927 to 939, gave the estate and the village of Corfe to the Bishop of Winchester.
In the 13th century, the bishops had established a deer park in the parish. King John visited the park in 1208.
The parish Church of St. Andrew and St. Mary was build around 1300. It’s now a Grade I listed building. This church was built on the site of what used to be a Saxon church. It underwent a restoration in 1869, by George Gilbert Scott. The north aisle and the south porch were both rebuilt.
In 1550, the Poundisford Park manor house was built for William Hill. This house was inherited by future generations of the Hill family. In 1692, one son added a dining room. The house was then sold to the Welman family in 1706, to the Helyers in 1869, and to the Vivian-Neals in 1928. The manor house has an English country house look to it. The main house is now designated a Grade I listed building. The estate also contains several other buildings, and several formal gardens that were laid out in the 17th century.
Prior’s Park and Adcombe Wood is close to Pitminster. This is a 103.6 hectare forest that is also classified as a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest. This forest has many specimens of broadleaved woodlands along the Blackdown Hills. It also contains many undeveloped marsh grasslands. The Wood is maintained by the Someset Wildlife Trust. This Wood is located on the northern slopes of the Blackdown Hills, and overlooks the Vale of the Taunton Deane.
The Blackdown Hills are a long range of hills located on the Somerset-Devon border. They are also considered an AONB—Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as of 1991. The Hills have evidence of human settlements dating back to the Iron Age. It has ancient hill forts, Norman castles, and WWII airfields.
