South Somerset was formed in April 1974, having previously been a part of the Langport Rural District.

The village has a history of coaching inns, and blacksmiths. During the time the Domesday book was recorded, in 1086, the village was called Chinwardestune.

Kingweston Parish was considered part of the hundred of Catsash, an administrative region in England.

After the Norman conquest in England during the 11th century, the manor of the village was given to Eustance, the Count of Bologne. His family owned it until it was given to the Bermondsey Abbey in 1114. They held the manor until the time of the Dissolution of the monasteries between 1536 and 1541. The Smyth family of Long Ashton owned it next, then sold it to Caleb Dickinson in 1740.

The Kingweston House is a special landmark in the village. It was built by the Dickinson family in the 19th century. Before it was built, an old Tudor house was on site for many years. Today, Kingweston House is now a boarding house for the Millfield School.

Kingweston Meadows is another biological site of Special Scientific Interest. These lands are filled with herbs and natural grasslands, some of which are rare in the rest of Britain today.

The Church of All Saints was built during medieval times, but most of its original features are gone. The church had an extensive rebuild by C.E. Giles from 1852 to 1855. The church has a tall tower with pointed spire, with graveyard and a metal fence. The church still retains its original Norman door and the font.

Once a year in July, the Somerton Horse Show is held at Home Farm in Kingweston. The show has been going on for over 60 years now, and its focus is to raise money for various charitable organisations.
