Flower Delivery to Cranmore with Clare Florist
Cranmore is a village as well as a civil parish that includes the hamlets of Dean, East Cranmore, and Waterlip. It is located 3.5 miles from the town of Shepton Mallet and is seven miles from Frome, a thriving community. The Cranmore parish has a couple of listed buildings including the 17th-century country house called Cranmore Hall which features a landscaped garden.
History
The village of Cranmore gets its name from the Old English Crane Mere which means “cranes or heron’s pool.” It’s an appropriate name as until this day, the pond located at the centre of the village still attracts a number of birds.
Attractions
A couple of interesting attractions are found in Cranmore as well as the rest of the parish. Located within the village itself is Cranmore Hall, a 17th-century country house that now forms part of the All Hallows Preparatory School.
Also located within the village of Cranmore is Southill House, a small 18th-century country house. It is a Grade I listed building built on a site that may have had Roman buildings. Another Grade I listed structure in the village is the 15th-century St Bartholomew’s Church.
The hamlet of Dean features the Dean Farmhouse, a 17th-century structure.
To the north of Cranmore is a 19th-century Victorian folly, Cranmore Tower. It was built for John Moore Paget of Cranmore Hall and is now a Grade II listed building. The structure has a viewing area and served as a lookout tower for the Home Guard and the Royal Corps of Signals during World War II.
Just outside East Cranmore is the Torr Works Quarry, one of the many ancient quarries located in the Mendip Hills. This quarry supplied the stones used to build Wells Cathedral as well as Glastonbury Abbey.
At the southern edge of Cranmore is the East Somerset Railway, a heritage railway that stretches two-and-a-half miles and ran between Cranmore and Mendip Vale. Today, the railway features many preserved diesel and steam locomotives.
Walking is also a favourite activity here at Cranmore. With a beautiful Somerset countryside, you will not only be treated to sights of lovely Cranmore flowers but may also encounter some wildlife. There are a couple of circular walks to take, including:
Circular Walk through Cranmore Wood – a 1.1-mile path starting at Cranmore Wood, which is mainly beechwood. May is a great time for walking the path as flowers in Cranmore are quite abundant, particularly bluebells.
Circular Walk from Cranmore Tower to East Somerset Railway – another trail starting from Cranmore Tower. This time, it’s 6.7 miles long and allows you to explore what the East Somerset Railway has to offer.
Circular Walk from Cranmore Tower to Asham Wood – this is a much longer walk, around 7.9 miles. It takes you to Asham Wood, a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest where you can find a range of unusual flora and fauna.
