The history of Somerset house dates back to 1547 when Lord Protector and Duke of Somerset, Edward Seymour, started building a palace for himself right on the banks of the Thames. When he was executed in 1552, the ownership of the palace passed on to the Crown.
At the age of 20, Princess Elizabeth moved to Somerset House in 1553. Until she was crowned Queen Elizabeth 1 in 1558, she called the House her home.
Over the years, more royalties moved in, such as the wife of James 1 of England Anne of Denmark. Naturally, Somerset House was renamed Denmark House in her honour.
Decades of neglect led to the demolition of the original Somerset House in 1775, with its replacement supervised by architect William Chambers. The Royal Academy of Arts became the new Somerset House’s resident in 1779. Not long after, the House hosted its first Royal Academy Exhibition.
Today, Somerset House hosts free guided tours where you will learn more about its history and explore various areas in the building.
