Flower Delivery to Sibdon Carwood with Clare Florist

Sibdon Carwood is a small hamlet in the Shropshire county of England. As of 2001, there were only 82 people living here. This hamlet is located in the southwestern portion of the country. It’s close to Craven Arms, which is a market town. Most of the residents are dispersed over the lands. There used to be a medieval fortification in the hamlet, and a manor house, both long since gone.

This hamlet is often known just by Sibdon. It was originally called Sibton, and then as Sibetune in the Domesday Book of 1086. Sibetune is from the Saxon word meaning “Sibba’s farmstead”. The word Carwood means “the wood where the rocks are found”.

The Sibdon Castle estate is located at the centre of the hamlet. The Castle is 187 metres above sea level. It’s technically not a castle, but more of a country house. It was built somewhere in the mid-17th century, by the Corbet family. It’s surrounded by parkland trees. The building underwent some extensive renovations in the 18th century. They added some castellated battlements in early 1800. At the back of the house is a courtyard and a stone stable. These buildings are now listed.

The original Sibdon castle was fortified, but it is uncertain when it was built, but likely taken done in the 17th century for the building of the newer castle.

St. Michael’s Church is located in Sibdon Carwood. It is a smaller building with another attachment added at a later date, and a rectangular tower, with graveyard to the side. The original church was built around 1180, and the west tower added around 1800. In 1800, the tower was converted to Gothic style, and tower battlements were added around 1871 or 1872. This church is also a listed building.

There is also a farmhouse in the hamlet, several cottages and outbuildings.  The farm offers activities for children and adults. There have been corn mazes set up in the fall. It’s believed there are about 34 households. Sibdon Pool is a spot that has some good fishing. There are many trees lining a long private road from Sibdon Carwood to Clun Road/B4368. The Shropshire Way and Wart Hill Wanderer roads provide easy travel around the town.

Due to its small size, the hamlet has no parish council, but they do have a parish meeting, meaning everyone in town can attend. The parish is a part of the Church Stretton and Craven Arms electoral division of the Shropshire council.

The eastern border of Sibdon Carwood is on Watling Street. It’s believed that this used to be an old Roman road. On the other side of the roa is the Craven Arms parish. To the north is the Long Lane with the Wistanow parish located here.

This tiny hamlet is located within the Shropshire Hills. The Shropshire Hills has the AONB designation, and they run all the way to Wales. They gained their designation in 1958, and flow over 802 square kilometres.
