History
Beighton Ward’s districts formed part of Derbyshire until 1967, when the then County Borough of Sheffield was extended, taking the area. Consequently, it was then transferred to the West Riding of Yorkshire, and in 1974, it became part of the City of Sheffield, in the ceremonial county and metropolitan of South Yorkshire.
Landmarks/Attractions
As mentioned earlier, this ward is a great base to seeing the popular attractions in Sheffield that travellers from every corner of the globe would want to see. These sites include:
Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet
Located in the south of Sheffield, this is run as a working museum with buildings and works dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. This museum shows the process of making blister steel from iron and coke, and then refining it through techniques that originate from the invention of the crucible steel process pioneered by Benjamin Huntsman.
The Arts Tower
This tower building, which is situated on Bolsover Street and opened in 1966, belongs to the University of Sheffield. It is named as “the most elegant university tower block in Britain of its period” by English Heritage. Standing at 78 metres tall, it is the 2nd tallest building in the city, following St Paul’s Tower on Arundel Gate.
Endcliffe Park
In commemoration of the Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887, this park, which comprises a parkland and woodland, was opened. The part where the Rustlings Road is located is grassy and is being used as recreation grounds. On the northern part, you will find a woodland that you can trek on several path options.
The Graves Park
This large parkland, located between the districts of Woodseats, Norton and Meadowhead, was developed by Alderman J.G.Graves in 1926 and finished in 1936. The project was to protect the thousand-year-old woodland from developments that modernism would bring. The park is a combination of open lands and woodlands that are flowed through by several streams. To its northeast, you will find an animal farm that houses rare breeds of pigs, cattle, donkeys, pigs and chickens.
Events
Like other districts in Sheffield, Beighton Ward also has events and celebrations of its own. One of the most recent that attracted attention was the Rubbish Day at the Severnside Estate. During such, members of the ward were requested to organise a run to tackle the increasing problem of household waste and litter that are collected in gardens and on the streets.
Well, there are definitely some events that you can join while on a holiday in this beautiful place. And again, to make your experience with your special someone more worthwhile and special, bring in an element of surprise.
