Flower Delivery to Selkirkshire with Clare Florist
Selkirkshire is a county in the southeastern region of Scotland. It’s one of the smaller counties, surrounded by five other counties, so it isn’t situated on the coastline. Caddonfoot is located to the north, Galashiels to the east, Kirkhope, and Ashkirk to the south, and Ettrick and Yarrow to the west.
The official coat of arms features a stag sitting on grass under an oak tree. The motto is “Leal to the Border”. The arms were granted in 1927 and are in relation to the “shire of the forest”, or Ettrick Forest, which used to be a popular hunting ground. This motif also appeared in the design for the Selkirkshire Yeomanry Cavalry in 1799.
Selkirkshire is called “Siorrachd Shalcraig” in Scottish, meaning “county of Selkirk”. Its name was derived from the county town, royal burgh of Selkirk. In 1801 only 5880 people lived here. In 2011, over 17,854 people lived in Selkirkshire. The civil parish of Yarrow has the greater population, with Galashiels having the least.
The history of Selkirkshire dates back to 1 AD, when native people hunted on the lands. The first sheriff on record is Andrew de Synton, who was appointed by William the Lion. Even after the Romans, Anglos, and Saxons came, none of the forestry was cleared, and the lands were known for their lush forests and moorlands.
Many people would call this region the Ettrick Forest. According to the Scottish kings, this was a royal forest. Today it’s also know as Selkirk Forest and Traquair Forests. Simon Fraser was the Keeper of the Forest around 1299. Before the forest was developed during modern times, it stretched from south of Peebles to Ayr.
The Battle of Philiphaugh happened in 1645. This was related to the civil war near the Scottish borders. Folk ballads have been written since then to commemorate the event. Synton was a small enclave located in the parish of Ashkirk.
There are thirty-eight castles, fortified houses, and towers located in the county of Selkirkshire. Newark Castle is a square-shaped tower on Bowhill Estate, built around the 15th or 16th centuries. It’s believed that the Earl of Douglas did a rebuild in 1423. It was last occupied in the 17th century and is now in ruins, with its four walls remaining but not much of the roof.
Another site of interest is Torwoodlee Tower, which has the ruins of a tower and wall that was built in the early 17th century. This is near the Gala Water. The Pringle family lived there for over 500 years.
