In the Valley of the Tweed at the foot of the triple peaks of Eildon Hills lies the town of Melrose. Although just a small place, Melrose has become popular not only for the annual Rugby Sevens, a sporting event, but also for its historical attractions.
History
Melrose has been inhabited for thousands of years. The Romans arrived in AD79 or AD80 and built a fort located close by called Trimontium or Place of the Three Hills.
Attractions
History enthusiasts and nature lovers will appreciate a visit to Melrose, as will sporting fans come the Rugby Sevens.
Melrose is home to the most famous ruin in Scotland, Melrose Abbey. The grand scale and lavish decorations of the abbey are evident even in its ruined state. David I, the 12th-century ruler of Scotland, founded the abbey for the Cistercian order in 1136. It was one of the many abbeys he built to show his piety and power. However, the abbey was destroyed when Richard II and his English army attacked in 1385. Although a rebuild was performed, further damage was inflicted during the War of the Rough Wooing in the 1540s. The abbey is also said to be the burial place for the heart of 14th-century Scottish warrior Robert the Bruce.
Those who want to learn more about the historic past of Melrose can pay a visit to the Three Hills Roman Heritage Centre, a short three-minute walk from the abbey. Housed in the centre are many Roman artefacts and information on Roman life. In addition, the centre hosts a guided walk to the abbey where the guides can be asked for more information about this particular time in Melrose’s history.
Flower enthusiasts can enjoy the different Melrose flowers found in nearby National Trust for Scotland gardens. Overlooked by Melrose Abbey is the Priorwood Garden, the only dedicated dried flower garden in Scotland. Covering two acres, there is a specialist garden featuring plants grown specifically for drying.
More flowers in Melrose can be found at Harmony Garden, a sister garden of Priorwood. This garden is set around a 19th-century house, which is not open to visitors but can be rented for holidays. Harmony Garden was built by joiner Robert Waugh who called it as such after the Jamaican pimento plantation that helped him earn a fortune. Apart from looking at the lovely blooms of Harmony Garden, one can also enjoy spectacular view of Melrose Abbey and the Eildon Hills.
The month of April is a lively one for Melrose as this is the time when the Rugby Sevens is in town. The rugby competition has been held here since 1883 and has attracted an international crowd.
