Flower Delivery to Ladykirk with Clare FLorist
In 1497, the Scottish king, James IV threw support behind Perkin Warbeck, a pretender to the English throne, and laid siege to nearby Norham Castle. The Stewart monarch established headquarters in Ladykirk, then known as Upsettlington. James tried to take the castle but the siege only lasted two weeks as the Stewart monarch was forced to abandon the cause after the arrival of the English army led by the Earl of Surrey. Soon after everything was settled, the king ordered a church (St Mary’s Church or Kirk of Steill) built in the area. He would eventually rename the village as Ladykirk.
Such is the history of Ladykirk, but visitors to the place come for much more than just what happened in the past. The village is located in the serene Scottish Borders, a region of arresting visual sights offered by both the landscape and the structures of the past. A visit here is a treat for the nature lover as well as the history enthusiast.
Ladykirk has a few gems of its own and can serve as a base for seeing other nearby sights. Heading here for a romantic trip is a good idea as well given the village’s location. The occasion can be made extra special by giving Ladykirk flowers to your date. Or, you can buy flowers in Ladykirk then present them during a special meal.
Attractions & Activities
The standout attraction in the village is definitely the St Mary’s Parish Church. It was built by James IV after the peaceful end to the siege of the nearby Norham Castle. The church was initially called Our Lady Kirk of Steill and lies on the north bank on the River Tweed. Some accounts also claim that the king had the church built as gratitude for a safe crossing of the Tweed.
The English village of Norham sits across the river and is where Norham Castle is located. The castle was built in the 12th century and was one of the best strongholds along the Tweed, which served as a barrier against the Scots. Norham was besieged nine times with four resulting in capture. Although the structure suffered from being attacked lots of times, it still remains one of the most interesting castles in England.
Exploring a bit further allows you to see the following attractions:
Lindisfarne Priory – This was home to early Christianity until the Vikings pillaged the area. The ruins of the priory are still beautiful to behold and there’s a museum where you can learn all about the history of the place.
Etal Castle – Located in the charming Etal village, this castle in Northumberland is a great spot for a day out with the family.
Paxton House – A historic country house in Berwickshire with a great collection of antiques.
