Flower Delivery to Innerleithen with Clare Florist

Innerleithen is a small town of 2586 people in Scotland. This town is located in the Scottish Borders in Scottish, near the border with England, and the Tweeddale committee area. In Gaelic the name of the town is spelled “Inbhir Leitheann”. Innerleithen means “the confluence of the Leithen”. This is where the Leithen river joins the Tweed.

The town is surrounded by hills. The Lee Pen is the tallest at 502 metres to the north, and the Caerlee hill at 258 metres to the south. At the east of the village is Prin Craig at 363 metres, nicknamed Rocky. The town is situated along an inverted “T” shape as it goes up the valley of the Leithen and along the north banks and flood plains of the Tweed.

The town has roots prior to Roman times. On the top of Caerlee Hill are the ruins of an Iron Age hill foot. These are in the shape of defensive ditchworks. Windy Knowe Hill also has some ruins that were previously mistaken as being Roman.

In 737, it’s believed the town was founded by a pilgrim monk named St. Ronan. He arrived at Innerleithen in a coracle boat  on the Tweed. Back then it was extremely common for monks to use the rivers to travel between their religious centres.

It’s believed that the town had a church in the early middle ages. A celtic stone was found and called the Runic Cross, even though there are no runes on it, and it is not in the shape of a cross. Today, it is located in the courtyard of the parish church on Leithen Road.

During the 12th century the town was called “Inverlethane”. There is a story about the son of King Malcolm IV of Scotland drowning in a pool that was eventually named The Droont Pool. Most believe this is only a tale as the King died at aged twenty-five without any children.

The town has also been called “Henderleithen” during the 15th century. It was called a hamlet within the Parish of Traquair.

During the industrial revolution wool milling was a steady industry. Innerleithen grew much larger and it’s believed the town had five wool mills at the time. Caerlee Mills eventually shut down in 2013.

During the 1950s, aerial photos were taken of the town. It was discovered that there used to be a Roman marching camp on the flood plain near the river Tweed at Toll Wood, and at Eshiels.

Today, tourism is a popular industry for the town. Once a year the town holds the St. Ronan’s Border Games, with people travelling from all over the UK. This is also called Games Week. This is to keep the legends and folktales of the region strong through an annual festival that runs about ten days long in July.
