Foulden is a civil parish and village located in the Berwickshire area of the Scottish Borders. Its location is not far from Whiteadder Water and is just 7 miles west of Berwick-upon-Tweed. It boasts "one of the most striking village ensembles in the Borders." The parish used to be one of the superiorities of Coldingham Priory. In fact, there is a part of the parish that is still called Nunlands. It was given to the Ramsey family and erected into a Free Barony.
William de Ramsey swore fealty to King Edward I two times, once in 1296 and another in 1304. He swore fealty for his lands, Dalwolsie, Endinburghshire and Foulden, Berwickshire. A member of the Ramsey family, George, lived in a tower house located at Foulden Bastel. He died in January 1592.
The barony of Foulden and its lands were conveyed to Sir John Wilkie, a rich burgess of Lanark, during the 1th century. The Wilkie family were in charge of construction and original ownership of the village. Foulden House, the local manor, was rebuilt by the Wilkies in 1800, but was a casualty of country-house demolitions during World War II.
