Llanidloes is an ancient Welsh market town located in the large county of Powys, approximately in the central portion of Wales. In 2012 the population was around 3000 people. Over 15% of the population speaks Welsh. Llanidloes is located at the beginning of the River Severn. In Welsh the River is called Afon Hafren.

Llanidloes is located amongst picturesque surroundings. It’s close to the dam and reservoir of Clywedog, on the Llyn Clywedog River. Commuters can enjoy travelling between a scenic mountain road that joins Machynlleth and Llanidloes.

Llanidloes is a hiker’s paradise. There are many scenic footpaths perfect for walking or hiking. One footpath called the Glyndwr’s Way connects with the Offa’s Dyke path, which is a long 257 km journey around mid-Wales, and takes a route through the Cambrian Mountains.

Another great hike is the Sarn Sabrina Walk. This is a 40 km circular walk that is organized once a year from Llanidloes to the start of the Severn, and back. It’s held on a Saturday in spring, prior to the bank holiday. There is also a Semi Sabrina walk for those who prefer a shorter route.

The Hafren Forest is located northwest of Llanidloes, and covers over 40 km. The forest takes its name from the Afon Hafren, or Severn River. A large portion is composed of peat bog, with mostly pine and spruce types of trees. Many events are held in the Forest each year, including car rallies–Rally GB, and Enduro motorcycle events.

The name Llanidloes comes from a Celtic saint from the 7th century–St. Llan Idloes. In Celtic this means the Church of St. Idloes. At some point there was a medieval church amongst earthen banks, but archaeologists have yet to verify this information.

In 1545 there were 49 taxpayers. The main industries were weaving and flannel production. These local products were sold in Shrewsbury. This industry reached its output by the 18th century. In about 1810, factories overtook the Llanidloes industry, initially creating increased employment in the region. Unfortunately, the technology was not as profitable as hand-weaving and production, and layoffs led to riots by 1839. By 1913, the last mill had closed. Mining, printing, tanning, and the iron industry became profitable new industries. The last mine closed in 1921. The last ironworks closed in the 1980s. Current industries include tourism, and brick and mortar shops.

Llanidloes is considered one of the most attractive towns in Wales, with many timber-framed buildings. The Old Market Hall was built around the 1600s, and still stands today. The Town Hall contains the Llanidloes Museum, and was built in 1908. Some of the current shopfronts date back to the Georgian period. It’s easy to travel to Llanidloes by the Llanidloes and Newton Railway.
