Islip is a small village and civil parish located in the south-central county of Oxfordshire, England. 652 people were recorded as living there, as of the 2011 census. The closest village to Islip is Kidlington, three kilometres away, and Oxford, eight kilometres away.

Like many villages in the UK, there have been remains found from an Romano-British villa, located about 800 metres to the southwest of the village.

Edward the Confessor was born in 1004 and died in 1066. He was born in Islip and it’s believed that he was baptised at one of the chapels here. This was located to the north of the current parish church, and was damaged in 1645 in the English Civil War. The chapel was demolished in the 1780s.

The Domesday Book of 1086 listed a watermill in the village. The last watermill shut down in 1947. The Book also lists common fields on the northern side of the River Ray.

Around 1300, the village cleared 200 acres of land for strip farming. This was called Sart Field in the 1970s.

Islip has only one Grade II Listed building, a former rectory that was built in 1689 for Robert South. In 1807 it was enlarged for William Vincent.

St. Nicholas the Confessor is an old parish church located in the village, with ancient graveyard and tower. Only parts of the current building remain from about 1200, with a rebuild of the chancel in 1780. The church had a major restoration in 1861, and is the only Grade I Listed Building in the village. Inside the belltower is a ring of eight bells.

Today, many houses in the village still have their original names from the coaching inn days. There are the Plume of Feathers, and the Prince’s Arms, both built around 1780 and from materials re-purposed from the Confessor’s Chapel. There is also the King’s Head or Coach and Horses, and the Saddler’s Arms.

Islip’s first railroad was built in 1850, called the Buckinghamshire Railway that ran from Bletchley and through Islip to Oxford Rewley Road. In 2015, Islip Station and the railway line were revamped and reopened, with further service extended in 2016. There are also future plans for more rail service to the village.

There used to be an old medieval road that linked London and Worcester and crossed the Ray at Islip. Later a bridge was built there.

An old mummers play dating from 1780 has been linked back to Islip. It’s about a girl called Molly who suffers a toothache, and finds that the source of her pain is a nail. There are various comical versions of the play.
