HISTORY
Idbury gets its name from the Old English for “Ida's burh.” About 1/3 mile west of the village is Idbury Camp, it is a hillfort that was used in the Iron Age, as well as during the Roman and Saxon occupation. In fact, there is evidence that it was used much earlier.
The village of Idbury has a church – the church of St Nicholas – which was originally a Norman creation but little of the design remains from that period save for the north doorway. The Church of England parish church is also a Grade I listed structure.
There was a Church of England School in the village from 1845 to 1966 but that has now been converted into a private house.
The Countryman – one of the oldest, most respected countryside magazines that focuses on rural issues and features articles concerning the people, places, history and wildlife relating to the British countryside – was founded in Idbury. In 1922, British journalist and author J.W. Robertson Scott moved to Idbury Manor and started the magazine by 1927.
