Flower Delivery to Fyfield with Clare Florist

About 4.5 miles west of Abingdon is the village of Fyfield. It used to be part of Berkshire but boundary changes in 1974 made it a part of Oxfordshire. The village also used to be on the main A420 road between Oxford and Faringdon, but now, a bypass carries the main road in the southern part of the village.

History

The toponym of Fyfield is derived from the Old English Fif Hide in the 10th century. From the 10th to the 16th century, the village's name was spelt Fifhide, but other records show it was also spelled Fivehide in the 11th century, Fifide from the 13th to the 15th century, Fifhede in the 15th century and Fighfield or Fyfylde in the 16th century.

Manor

A manor has been around in the village since the 10th century. According to the Chronicle of Abingdon, King Eadwig granted high thegn Æthelnoth 13 manses of land in Fyfield in AD 956. By AD 968, 11 of these hides of land along with another 12 hides were confirmed by King Edgar to the Benedictine Abingdon Abbey.

The manor was granted to Henry de Ferrers after the Norman Conquest. John Golafre held the manor in the 15th century. Later on, John, Earl of Lincoln was in possession of the manor. When he died in 1487, the manor passed to the Crown and was granted to life to Lady Catherine Gordon – the widow of the pretender Perkin Warbeck – who later married Christopher Ashton and in 1531 came to Fyfield.

Sir Thomas White was given the remainder in 1554. Then, he gave it to his new foundation, St John's College, Oxford, which has held it since then.

The present manor house was built around 1320 or 1325 and expanded during the Elizabethan era. It shouldn't be confused with the nearby Manor Farmhouse which was built around 1700.

Parish Church

Originally a Norman building in the late 12th or early 13th century, the St Nicholas Parish Church was largely rebuilt in the 14th century. Additions were made in the succeeding centuries.

Amenities

In the 15th century, the White Hart public house was built by the executors of John Golafre. Today, it's an award-winning establishment perfect for special events in your life.
