Curbridge is a tiny village in England, located in the county of Oxfordshire. It’s located in the central middle-lower region of England. It’s surrounded by plenty of green pastures, and local roads flow in a “V” shape to connect in the middle. In 2011 the population was recorded at 529 people. The local church is St. John the Baptist. The town is noted for its Roman remains, with other notable history from the 15th century. In the 1970s the town was separated with a bypass, and Witney is now considered the northern part of the boundary, with Curbridge in the southern region.
Approximately 150 houses are currently located in Curbridge. Besides the church, there is the village hall, a garage, a bakery, garden marquee rentals, and a pub. The people of Curbridge are social, and a Social Club organizes community events for the Village.
The Social Club is responsible for organizing an annual Fete where villagers gather for food, fun, and entertainment. There are fireworks displays during the evening. In the winter, Father Christmas visits, and meals are prepared for the older folks. A special Wine Circle also gathers to socialize and sample wines. The village has an Aunt Sally team, which is an old traditional game played outdoors. The town likes to host events such as pickles and chutney night tasting competitions, to find the best tasting home-canned goods.
The Curbridge Parish Hall is available for rental for birthdays, children’s parties, and other celebrations.
In 1838 a Church of England chapel was built in Curbridge. In 1874 C.C. Roife added an apse, or arch. Roife was a popular gothic revival architect of his time. Unfortunately, the chapel was demolished in 1906, and a new St. John the Baptist Parish Church was built on this site. This church is also considered part of the Benefice of Whitney and Hailey. It’s the only church of worship in the village. Services are still held every Sunday.
Caswell Farm is located 1.2 km southwest of the town. This is a moated farmstead that has some remnants from its past, including a 15th century house.
In the 1970s during the construction of the Witney Bypass, a Roman-British settlement was found. These remains were found northeast of the Manor Farm. Bodies, artifacts, and building foundations were found.
Of note were the foundations from several rectangular timber-framed buildings. Some also had limestone rubble foundations. A cemetery was found on site, containing at least eighteen graves. It’s believed there may have been more, but now they’re beneath the bypass. The gravesite was found with a midden heap piled on top.
Special artifacts found on the site include a whetstone made with local limestone, a copper ring, an old Roman coin from 350 to 353 AD, pottery, and hobnails from rotted leather footwear.
