The village of Chadlington is listed in the Domesday Book as Cedelintone. By 1268, it was called Chadleytone then it became Chedelinton by 1307. St Chad, a native of Northumbria, is said to have lived in the village.
Knollbury, a neolithic enclosure believed to be a defensive structure, is located to the north-west of the village. The Hawk Stone megalith is also located in the hamlet of Dean which is to the east of Chadlington.
The name Chadlington is said to mean “The Hill” or “Tun” of Ceadda or Chad.
