Flower Delivery to Brighthampton with Clare Florist
Brighthampton is a small hamlet located in the central-southeast region of England. The closest villages nearby are Witney in West Oxfordshire, 6.4 kilometres away, and Standlake. Brighthampton is located in the district of West Oxfordshire, and the county of Oxfordshire.
The Brighthampton name was derived from “Beorhthelm’s Tun”. During the tenth century, this hamlet was a part of the Royal Manor of Bampton. In 984, King Aethelred (the Unready) II, gave land to one of his ministers.
The Domesday Book has a record that states that in 1086, William the Conqueror’s half brother, Odo, the bishop of Bayeux, was Brighthampton’s feudal overlord. In 1087, his lands were confiscated after he was imprisoned.
In 1131, King Henry I gave this same land to Sees Priory in Normandy. He also granted land to them from Hardwick. This became a single manor of Brighthampton and Hardwick.
Another notable record from town is that the town had a stone cross in the 17th century. In 1857, it was recorded that there were the remains, or base of a stone cross left at the hamlet’s central crossroads. This is long gone now.
Brighthampton is noted for its archaeological discoveries, dating back to 5 AD. South of the Malthouse Farm there can be findings from a large pagan burial ground, dated from around 5 to 6 centuries AD. This discovery was made in 1820, when human bones were found. Formal excavation began in 1857 to 1858, where they found fifty-four burials on site. They also found ten cremation burials, and a wide range of grave goods. In 1892, six more burial sites were found at Malthouse Farm. The latest notable find was in 1949. The most interesting artifacts found included an ornate sword with gilt scabbard, and an ornate gilt brooch. These items are now currently at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
There are some notable historic buildings in Brighthampton. Force Cottage was built in the 16th century and is a timber-framed building. In 1776 it was listed as a public house. Manor Farm, or Florey’s Farm, is a farmhouse made of Cotswold stone, and built during the early 17th century. Additions were built onto it in the middle of the 17th century, and the 19th century.
In 1832, a chapel was built between Brighthampton and Standlake. It was popular in the 1840s-50s, and had an expansion to the gallery in 1865. Services were discontinued in 1937, but resumed in 1951 to 1978. Today, the chapel is a private house.
