Bladon is a civil parish and village of 898 people, as of the 2011 UK census. It’s located in Oxfordshire in the central lower portion of England. It’s right on the River Glyme and is about 10.5 kilometres from Oxford, located in the northwest.
The River Glyme passes through Oxfordshire, England. It’s one of the tributaries of River Evenlode. The river passes through Blenheim Park. “Capability” Lancelot Brown dammed the river to form the lake that is in front of Blenheim Palace.
Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965), former Prime Minister of the UK and who held many other positions in parliament was born in Blenheim Palace, and was buried in Bladon, at St. Martin’s Church. He was Prime Minister of the UK twice—1940 to 1945—and 1951 to 1955. His wife Clementine was buried in the same grave after her own death ten years later.
St. Martin’s Church of England was built around the 11th or 12th centuries. The south porch of the church had a Norman doorway. Unfortunately, the old church was completely demolished in 1802, and by 1804, a new one resided in its place. In 1891 it had a complete rebuild by the Gothic Revival architect A.W. Blomfield, who has been responsible for rebuilding almost one hundred of the many of the other Gothic churches in England.
The St. Martin’s Parish also includes Blenheim Palace. This is a large country house-styled building. This used to be the family seat of the Dukes of Marlborough. This Peerage of England title was created by Queen Anne in 1702 for the first Earl of Marlborough, John Churchill. While later Dukes are often named, to just refer to the “Earl of Marlborough” usually references John Churchill.
Blenheim Palace has the distinction of being the only non-royal country house in England to be called a palace. It was built from 1705 to 1722. It has now been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Almost all family members from the Spencer and Churchill lines have been buried in the St. Martin’s churchyard. The exceptions are the Dukes and Duchesses who have been buried in the Blenheim Palace chapel.
The village also has the Bladon Methodist Church, built in 1877. The Methodist congregation was established in 1820, with the first chapel built in 1843. This chapel is no longer standing. The Church was built in the early English style from the 13th century. It’s now owned by the Oxford Methodist Circuit.
The Duchess of Marlborough founded a school in 1858 for the village. It was built in Gothic revival style, and was enlarged in 1890. It’s now a Church of England primary school.
