Asthall is a small village in the central southern region of England, located in Oxfordshire county. It’s located on the River Windrush. It’s included with the regions of Fordwells, Worsham, Stonelands, Ashthall Leigh, and Field Assarts. It’s often spelled as Asthal. 252 were listed as living in this village in 2012. St. Nicholas’s parish church serves the regions, and is surrounded by shrubbery and flowering bushes in the spring and summer.
The history of Asthall can be traced back to the bronze age. There are two barrows that potentially date back to this time, indicating the site of a village. The Akeman Street Roman Road runs through Windrush Farm. The origins of this road date back to the Middle Ages. There have been some minor archeological findings along this road, indicating an ancient Roman settlement at one point. One popular artifact found is a bronze figurine of a bird grabbing a hare. A 7th century Saxon barrow exists along the Witney-Burford road. There have been the cremated remains of a man found, as well as several small objects that are now located in the Ashmolean Musuem, Oxford.
The town’s notable manor is Asthall Manor, built around 1620. Its building materials were sourced locally. It’s two stories, with an attic. It was altered and enlarged in 1916. There are over six acres of gardens, and it’s listed as an official historic garden. The lands include herbaceous borders, lawns, traditional gardens, formal gardens, woodlands, wild flowers and ponds.
The gardens were created for the Bannerman family, who still own the manor. Previously, the Mitford sisters lived at the Manor. It’s generally kept private, but occasionally the family rents out the ballroom for private events. Every two years a sculpture and music festival is held on the lands, entitled “On Form”.
Saint Nicholas Church was renovated in 1160. It’s unknown when the earlier church was built prior to that time. It’s built in Norman and early English gothic style. It has beautifully decorated gothic windows. The church was significantly restored in 1859. Three bells were added in 2005. The original Sanctus bell from 1640 still remains, and is still used today.
Wychwood Forest is the nearest to the village. Originally Asthall Manor was built on part of the lands encompassing the forest, around the year 1154. The Field Assarts was named after the process of clearing out a forest. This was a process done by medieval folk in order to get the forest clear and convert the land to an agricultural usage. The northeastern portions of the town’s forest remained until about 1857, and then converted to farm land.
