Flower Delivery to Stocksfield, Northumberland with Clare Florist
Stocksfield is a small, commuter village close to River Tyne, some 15 miles off Newcastle upon Tyne and 10 miles off Hexham in southern Northumberland, England. Stocksfield is surrounded by several villages and hamlets which include New Ridley, Old Ridley, Bywell, Mickley, Hindley and Hedley on the Hill. The name Stocksfield seems to mean ‘marked by or field by, the posts.’
Stocksfield was built by the late Victorians just as the Newcastle Carlisle railway was opened. However, the hamlets and villages which constitute the Broomley & Stocksfield Parish Council trace their origins back many centuries. Stocksfield is the largest settlement in the parish. The earliest evidence of human activity in the parish traces back to the Mesolithic period. Although not much exist to prove this. However some remains from the afthermath of the Norman Conquest offer some insight into the past.
The medieval and post medieval periods were known to be troubled times between the England and Scotland borders but Stocksfield which lied a little distant from the border didn’t suffer much. A building known as the West Farmhouse is thought to incorporate remains of a battle. As peace returned to the Border region in the 17th and 18th centuries, this building was extended and became a less defensive home. Agriculture is one of the well known post medieval economic activities the area was well known for. The Newcastle to Carlisle railway came in the 19th century and by the later 20th century Stocksfield had developed largely into a commuter village for Tyneside.
