HISTORY
The presence of cup and ring marked stones, standing stones and hill forts are proof that Gilsland was occupied during the Bronze and Iron Age. The village of Gilsland is located upon Hadrian's Wall, which is a noted monument that was constructed by the Roman army.
The area now known as Cumbria passed from the control of the Kingdom of Strathclyde to King Henry II, a Norman monarch, in the 12th century. As such, the region was divided into baronies and the easternmost became the Barony of Gilsland. William Howard ruled the barony during the 16th/17th century and his dominion stretched from Carlisle to the present-day Gilsland.
Economic activity in the area grew dramatically with the Union of the Crowns and the suppression of the Jacobite rebellion. In the 1760s, the Gilsland Spa was built and became a popular summer resort by the 1780s. A railway station opened in 1876 which furthered tourism in the area.
Today, Gilsland seems isolated although it features popular public footpaths, cycle tails and bridleways.
