Flower Delivery to Ellington – A Village on the Coast of Northumberland

A small village on the coast of Northumberland, Ellington is about four miles from Ashington, six miles from Morpeth and 20 miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne. The  village was home to one of the last operational deep coal mines, the Ellington Colliery, which closed on 26 January 2005.

HISTORY

The lands of Ellington has had many owners over the years. In 1240, the manor of Ellington was believed to be owned by Adam de Periton which later passed to the Vescy and Welles families through marriage. By the 13th century, the Widdrington family acquired several possessions in Ellington.

Lord Widdrington relinquished the manor of Ellington together with those at Woodhorn, Creswell and Newbiggin in 1715. Adam Askew of Newcastle upon Tyne bought other lands and interests in Ellington in 1750.

A large part of Ellington was owned by the Baker-Creswells in the early years of the 19th century. It was as such until they sold their estate in 1924.

Before being known as a colliery village, Ellington was a thriving community in the mid-19th century with a school, two public houses and several businesses. The colliery, owned by Ashington Coal Company, started operations in 1911. Since then, the colliery changed the village from being rural to a prosperous one with colliery houses, shops and businesses.
