Eglingham is a small village located in the shire country of Northumberland, in the northeastern region of England. It’s located on the River Aln, about one hundred metres above sea level. Closer towns nearby are Wooler, sixteen kilometres away, and Alnick, eleven kilometres away. The 2011 census states that there were 385 people living in the Eglingham parish region, including South Charlton. Eglingham itself has about 100 residents, with about sixty dwellings.
Eglingham lies in a rural conservation area, set up in 1972, with plenty of green rolling hills. Eight kilometres away are the Cheviot Hills. It’s located within the Eglingham Burn valley. Eglingham is surrounded by farms, moors, and woodlands. There is an arboretum, and commercial forestry happening in the region. Eglingham Hall is the main manor in town, and located on the main road that passes through. The village is on fourteen kilometres by 4.5 kilometres of land.
Eglingham Hall used to be the town manor, and is now a listed building. In 1514, Henry Ogle acquired the land. His nephew built the current mansion on the site of a pele tower. Oliver Cromwell was a guest at the manor in 1650. The seven bay windows were added in 1728. An eastern wing was added in 1903. The Ogle family owned the manor for over four hundred years. In the early 20th century the Bewicke family bought it, and remain the current owners.
The town contains a village hall. There is also Harehope Hall, which was built as a sporting lodge for the Baker-Cresswell family. Captain Joe Baker-Cresswell was the Royal Navy officer noted for his role in the capture of an intact Enigma cipher machine.
The Church of St. Maurice was built in the 13th century, and dedicated to St. Maurice. It was rebuilt after the rebellion of the 17th century. The church is built of mostly stone. This is where the pele tower is located. This tower was where villagers could hide while cattle thieves would run through town. The church’s bell was cast in Europe. It was enlarged in 1836.
There have been notable items found in the village from the Neolithic, or Bronze Age, including tools, a spearhead, cairns, barrows, and cists. There is a promontory fort from the Iron Age, on the Shipley moor. Beanley Moor has settlement remains from Roman times.
Besides farming, past town industries have included coal, limestone, and freestone. The Eglinham Colliery closed in 1897, due to the high costs of removing water from the mine first. The population of the village was greater in the past, with 2000 people in 1851.
