History
Bamburgh Castle is said to be the capital of the Brythonic Kingdom of Bryneich which existed from AD 420 to 547. The castle was taken by invading Angles, led by Ida son of Eoppa, in 547. According to Historia Brittonum, the castle was renamed Bebbanburgh. From then on, it was the capital of the the Anglian Kingdom of Bernicia before it merged with neigbouring Deira in 634. The two realms then united as Northumbria and the capital was moved to York.
Attractions
· Bamburgh Castle – covering nine acres of land and situated high on a rocky perch above the Northumberland coastline, this castle is one of the largest inhabited ones in the country. Throughout the ages, the castle was constantly attacked and went into a state of disrepair for centuries. That is, until Victorian Industrialist Lord Armstrong bought the property and set out to restore it. The Armstrong family still own the castle to this day and they allow visitors to take a peek and experience the beauty and history of the place.
· Grace Darling Museum – Grace Darling was the inspiration for the song "Amazing Grace" and this attraction is dedicated to her. She is known for saving lives after the steamship Forfashire ran aground on the rocks of Big Harcar.
· St Aidan's Church – the church draws tourist attention because Aidan was the Apostle of Nortumbria as well as the apostle of England. This made the church the “mother church” of the Diocese of Newcastle as well as the centre of Christianity in England. Plus, there's an effigy of Grace Darling inside the church and her grave and memorial are outside as well.
