Great Oxendon is a village located in the East Midlands region, and Northamptonshire county of England. It has a small population of approximately 400 people. This region is noted for Little Oxendon, a deserted medieval village which is located only one mile directly north of Great Oxendon village. It’s remarkably well-preserved. The more recent Great Oxendon village is located on over 700 hectares of land, much of it wide open fields, and farm land.
The Brampon Valley Way is a trail along an old railway line which is popular with bicyclists, walkers, and hikers. A fence protects trails along certain portions of the rail line. This trail is called a linear park, and runs from Northampton to Market Harborough. There are two unused railway tunnels that are a part of the route, but one must remember to bring a flashlight, or to take an alternate route over the tunnel.
There are many other walking paths to enjoy in town, and fishing lakes where one may relax and have a picnic, or afternoon tea.
Great Oxendon is characterized by many green grassy meadows surrounding the village. It can be reached by the A508, and is close to Market Harborough. The present village dates from approximately 1800, though there are some older buildings still present. It is listed in the Domesday book. Many of the village buildings have been built in red brick and sandstone from Northamptonshire.
In the First Civil war, the town was the starting point for the final battle of Royalists versus Parliamentarians, down the road at Naseby. There’s a battle field trail that pedestrians can walk along to learn a bit of history.
The Church of St Helen is a restored and protected church still in use today. Townsfolk still attend services at the Church of St Helen. The church is protected by the National Heritage Trust since 1954, and has been carefully restored over the years. There is no listed date of construction, though it most likely dates to around medieval times. In 1870 a stained glass window was installed by Powell, and exists to this day. In 1837 a marble monument table was dedicated to Elizabeth Harrison. On the official British History site it lists a document (Hist. of Northants., II) that claims in 1719, a Roman coin of Marcus Aurelius was listed as being found to the north of the church.
The Village Hall is available to be booked for special events, and has an attached outdoor garden play area. The village hosts various community events such as village Sunday lunches, and fetes where crafts, local produce, and snacks can be purchased.
