History

Streanæshalc, Streneshalc, Streoneshalch, Streoneshalh, and Streunes-Alae in Lindiss were known names of Whitby in records dating from the 7th and 8th centuries. Its 11th century name was Prestebi, which is Old Norse for “habitation of priests.” The name of the town is also recorded as Hwitebi and Witebi, which in Old Norse means “white settlement.” Furthermore, it was recorded as Whitebi in the 13th century and Qwiteby in the 14th century.

The earliest known record of settlement in the area was when it was called Streanœhealh. This was where Oswy, the Christian king of Northumbria, founded the first abbey, which was under the abbess Hilda.

From the period starting in 1078, the town was known using the name it bears today, Whitby.

The town functioned as a fishing settlement until the 18th century, which was when it developed into a port and centre for shipbuilding and whaling. It was also known for the trade of locally minded alum, as well as the manufacture of Whitey jet jewellery.
