Topcliffe is a small village located in the North Yorkshire county of upper eastern England. There were 1400 residents listed here in the 2001 census. The River Swale passes by the village, and the A167 is the easiest way to get into town. It’s closest to Thirsk and Northallerton. There is an army barracks that’s on the north end of the village, that previously was a Royal Air Force Base during WWII.
The town of Topcliffe has a recorded history leading back to the Domesday book of 1086. Back then it was listed as “Topclive”. Topcliffe is derived from the old English words of topp and clif, which means top of the cliff.
There used to be a railway line through the village on the Leeds and Thirsk Railway line. The station opened in 1848, and then closed in 1959.
During the Norman invasion, the village’s main manor was owned by Bernwulf. Later, ownership passed to William of Percy. The Percy family lived here until the mid-17th century. The family briefly lost the manor in 1461, as the owner Henry Percy died. The ownership passed back to the family in 1469. It then passed to the Seymour and then the Wyndham family.
In 1071 a castle was built at the site of the River Swale and Cod Beck. In 1174 the Percy family had it refortified. Most of the family actually lived in the castle. After the castle fell into ruins, a moated manor house was built on the same site. John Topcliffe was the Lord Chief Justice of Ireland and he lived in the manor house until he died in 1513.
Topcliffe has a thriving farmland economy. In the past it held great importance as a market place. Many small businesses are dotted around the village. There is a large industrial economy just outside the town, and a caravan park.
Topcliffe Mill is an older building, several stories tall. There used to be a mill in the town around 1086. It’s believed it used to be on the site of where Roller Mill operated until 1961. The building has now been converted to a restaurant and apartments.
The Topcliffe F.C. play on the playing fields at Winn Lane. This league has been around since the 1920s.
The village’s church, St. Columba, has been there since early Saxon times. It’s believed that St. Aiden’s Mission was near this church around 650 AD. The current church was built around the 13th century, with many improvements being made leading to the present. The building is a protected heritage site. There is also a second church in the village, the Wesleyan Methodist Church, built in 1840.
