History
According to archaeological finds, Thirsk was settled between 500-600 BC. It is mentioned twice in the Domesday Book and was split between to local Saxon landowners called Orm and Thor at the time of the Norman invasion. Afterwards, the manor was divided between Hugh, son of Baldric and the Crown. Much of the land was granted to Robert de Mowbray in later years and the surrounding vale gets its name from him.
Attractions
There are a couple of attractions within and around Thirsk. Being the home of James Herriot, there is a museum dedicated to his life and works called The World of James Herriot. Sowerby, an adjoining village, provides Thirsk with its cinema, the Ritz Cinema on Westgate. Dating back to 1912, the cinema is run by volunteers. Rural Arts, an arts charity based at The Courthouse on Westgate, features an award-winning cafe and an art gallery.
A Grade II*-listed building is located in Kirkgate called Thirsk Hall. The structure was built in 1720 and by 1770, New York architect John Carr extended the hall.
Thirsk also has a museum called Thirsk Museum and it's housed in the 18th-century birthplace of Thomas Lord, a cricketer and founder of Lord's Cricket Ground. The museum features eight period rooms featuring walk-around displays that reflect and record the life and times of Thirsk.
